The ITI Electrician Course Curriculum is structured to balance theoretical electrical science with intensive hands-on workshop training. Regulated by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT), the curriculum allocates approximately 60–70% of total hours to practical workshop execution.
1. Year 1: Foundational Theory & Practical Modules
The first year focuses on building foundational mechanical skills, electrical safety protocols, domestic installation, and basic circuit analysis.
- Safety & First Aid: Learning occupational hazards, personal protective equipment (PPE), artificial respiration, and handling electrical fires using specific fire extinguishers.
- Allied Trades Workshop: Hands-on exercises in basic fitting, carpentry, sheet metal work, and drilling to support mounting and structural tasks.
- Wires, Joints & Cables: Mastering wire stripping, forming secure joints (such as Britannia, Tee, and Western Union), soldering techniques, and underground cable laying.
- Basic Electrical Laws: Experimental verification of Ohm's Law, Kirchhoff's Laws (KVL/KCL), and analyzing series, parallel, and combination resistive networks.
- Magnetism & AC Circuits: Studying electromagnetism, mutual induction, and single-phase/three-phase AC parameters (power factor, impedance, and resonance).
- Cells & Batteries: Installing, testing, charging, and maintaining lead-acid, lithium-ion, and solar photovoltaic batteries.
- Domestic Wiring & Earthing: Planning industrial and residential layouts, implementing conduit systems, testing insulation resistance, and constructing pipe/plate earthing systems.
- Illumination: Designing lighting installations using LED, CFL, sodium vapor, mercury vapor, and decorative light fixtures.
2. Year 2: Advanced Industrial Machinery & Systems
The second year shifts toward heavy industrial equipment, automation controls, power electronics, and power distribution systems.
- DC Machines: Understanding the assembly, winding configurations, characteristics, and troubleshooting of DC Generators and DC Motors (shunt, series, and compound).
- AC Industrial Motors: Connecting, starting, reversing, and speed-regulating single-phase and three-phase induction motors using DOL, Star-Delta, and Auto-transformer starters.
- Alternators & Synchronous Motors: Operating, synchronizing (using dark/bright lamp methods), and regulating industrial power alternators.
- Transformers: Performing open-circuit, short-circuit, and transformation ratio tests on single-phase and three-phase distribution transformers.
- Basic Electronics: Soldering and testing circuit boards featuring diodes, transistors, SCRs, TRIACs, UJTs, and simple amplifier setups.
- Control Panel Wiring & Drives: Layout planning, routing, and crimping within industrial panels. Utilizing AC/DC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for motor automation.
- UPS, Inverters & EV Circuits: Installing solar inverters, checking thermal battery setups, and understanding basic Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations.
- Power Systems & Substations: Understanding generation plants, grid transmission lines, substation layout, insulators, circuit breakers, protective relays, and lightning arrestors.
3. Core Ancillary Subjects
In addition to technical core skills, students must clear assessments in three supporting subjects:
- Workshop Calculation & Science: Applied engineering mathematics (fractions, square roots, ratio-proportion, trigonometry, algebra) and physics (mass, volume, heat, pressure, electricity, work, power, energy).
- Engineering Drawing: Hand-drawing orthographic projections, circuit schematics, layout diagrams, freehand tool sketches, and digital symbols.
- Employability Skills: Training in English communication, digital literacy (MS Office, internet tools), entrepreneurship, financial literacy, productivity metrics, and environmental awareness.
4. Examination & Assessment Structure
Students undergo an annual examination via the All India Trade Test (AITT) conducted through a Computer Based Test (CBT) and an offline practical exam.
